Psychedelic Therapy: A Discussion with Yvonne Höller

Yesterday, I was pleased to be a guest on Yvonne Höller’s podcast, Cognitive Neuroscience @UNAK. She invited me to discuss a study my co-authors and I recently published on the potential negative effects of psilocybin in the context of therapy. I have previously disseminated these results in my post “Psychedelic-assisted therapy: Are we ignoring potential pitfalls?” but discussing them with Yvonne was lots of fun!

Our discussion included an overview of the field of psychedelic sciences with an emphasis on the quality of evidence for psychedelic-assisted therapy, the results of the study, but also psychotherapy in general, how one can become accredited as a psychologist in Iceland, and more!

Yvonne is a Professor at the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Akureyri in Iceland, and I have been fortunate to collaborate with her on the EPIC-SAD project this winter. Her thought-provoking questions and interest in science will hopefully help disseminate our study’s findings and promote public discourse.

You can listen to our discussion here or in the player below. I hope you enjoy the podcast as much as I enjoyed recording it!

The show notes for the podcast are available here, with links to some of the other studies we discussed.

I had lots of fun discussing our study with Yvonne and I hope that this makes our study more approachable for all individuals interested in psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Relatedly, I was recently approached by PsyPost for an interview about this same study. PsyPost is an independent science news website dedicated to reporting the latest research on human behavior, cognition, and society.

The interview is titled Therapists report significant psychological risks in psilocybin-assisted treatments and is part of my commitment to disseminate research findings to the public in an easy-to-understand manner. You can read more here or in the embed below.
